Note: PETER PAASCH, 80, SUCCUMBS TODAY
Had Been Active on Lake Michigan Since 12 Years Old; Funeral
Sunday
Peter Paasch, well-known resident of Ludington, passed away at
6:15 this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. M.
Johnston of 310 East Court Street, with whom he had made his
home since May. He had been in failing health for several
years.
Born in Sheboygan, Wis., Jan. 19, 1855, Mr. Paasch had been
active about Lake Michigan since he was 12 years of age, first
being employed at Sheboygan by William Warner, father of Mrs.
Minnie Keseberg, who was a former city treasurer of Ludington.
Enters Coast Guard Service
Mr. Paasch came to Michigan in his early 20's, when he entered
the coast guard service at Point Sauble. He remained there
until the life saving service was established in Ludington in
connection with the coast guard service at that time being
transferred from Point Sauble to the local station. Here he
served under Capt. Charles Tufts, who later became
representative for the state legislature from Mason County.
Following his coast guard service, Mr. Paasch was engaged in
commercial fishing after which he was employed in government
harbor construction work at Manistee and Fox Harbor, Wis. He
retired from active labor a few years ago.
Since the death of his wife six years ago Mr. Paasch had
divided his time between the homes of his brother William
Paasch of Wiley and his daughter, Mrs. Johnston.
Funeral Is Sunday
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Johnston of this city and
Mrs. C. H. Pomeroy of Los Angeles, Calif., two grandsons, Henry
W. Johnston and Robert Pomeroy, two brothers, William Paasch,
now living on North Rowe Street, and George Paasch of
Sheboygan, Wis., and two sisters, one in Illinois and other in
Texas.
The body will remain at Dorrell mortuary until Saturday
afternoon when it will be removed to the home of Mrs. Johnston
from where funeral services will be held at 2:30 Sunday
afternoon with Rev. Paul Haskell Clark officiating. Interment
will be made in Lakeview Cemetery.
Many Pay Tribute to Peter Paasch
A large number of relatives and friends gathered at the home of
Mrs. A. M. Johnston, 310 East Court Street, Sunday afternoon to
pay their final respects to her father, Peter Paasch, veteran
sailor of Lake Michigan and a familiar figure of Ludington.
Many beautiful floral offerings showed the esteem in which Mr.
Paasch was held by a large circle of friends, many of them
long-standing friends of the family while Mr. Paasch lived in
Wiley. Rev. Paul Haskell Clark, pastor of Community church,
spoke comforting words, telling of the splendid service of Mr.
Paasch as a life guard and of the dangers encountered in that
work.
Interment was made in Lakeview cemetery with William DeYoung of
Pentwater. E. C. Rohn, Charles
Peterson, John Gustafson, William Ebersole and W. H.
Cuthbertson as pallbearers.
Relatives from out-of-town who came for the services were
George Paasch of Sheboygan, Wis., who returned this morning;
Mrs. Mary Machia of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., who is remaining to
spend the week at the John Paasch home at North Rowe Street,
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nalipinski of Manistee and William Paasch of
Grand Rapids.
Mr. Paasch, who was 80 years of age, passed away Friday at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Johnston, following a paralytic
stroke, which he suffered a week ago. Although he had suffered
several light strokes and had not been well for a month, he had
been able to be up and around and enjoyed visits with his
friends.
