afternoon at her home after a lingering illness. She was 71
years of age.
Mrs. Shue was born in Westminster, Carrol county, Maryland, on
Nov 6, 1869. At the age of two years, she moved with her
family to Henry county, Indiand, where they resided during the
next 12 years. In Sept. 1882, they moved to Mason county,
Michigan, where Mrs. Shue has since resided. During the last
40 years, she had been a resident of Ludington.

death by her husband 15 years ago. Four children, one of whom
died in infancy, were born to them.
Mrs. Shue became a Christian in early life and was united with
the Free Methodist church, of which she was a faithful and
honored member for many years. She lived an unselfish life and
devoted herself to administering to the wants of others,
assisting and caring for them in illness. She was an exemplary
wife and mother.
Surviving to mourn her loss are her three sons, Joseph, Chester

Note: According to Death Record, was born Nov 17, 1840 in Washington
DC.
Note: Died of Old Age.
Note: The earliest information we have about the genealogy of this
family is that Henry (Miller) Sanders is probably the son of a
Mr. and Mrs. Miller recorded as emigrating to this country from
Germany to Washington D.C. in about 1837. According to a
nephew of Magdeline (Henry's wife), Dan Wantz of near New
Castle, Indiana, the Miller parents came from Ireland. Henry's
red hair makes this story more believable. The general
concensus among the family, however, is that the ancestory is
German. There is no question that Magdeline Leheigh was
German.
Apparently Mr. Miller died when Henry was quite young. It is
unknown whether Mrs. Miller remarried a Sanders and the
children changed their last name but were forced into an
orphanage after her death at the request of their step-father.
or whether both parents died, leaving a young family to be
placed in an orphanage. If so, the young Henry was adopted out
(officially or unofficially) by a Sanders family and took that
name.
At any rate, it was unknown to Henry who he was for sure until
his sisters found him some years later and informed him of his
Miller ancestory. When they, as good Catholics found him to
have been brought up Protestant, they severed all ties with him
once more.
Magdaline Leheigh was the daughter of John and Catherine
Leheigh. Henry and Magdeline married in 1862 in Westminster
County, Maryland during the early part of the Civil War and
lived in Hagerstown, Maryland. The story is told that during
the Battle of Gettysburg, the noise of the Cannon Balls rattled
the windows. Asked why he didn't fight in the Civil War, Henry
would tell that he was so skinny that when he went to enlist,
they were so sure that he was sickly that they refused to take
him. Those who remember him know that that was far from the
truth. He kept that 'rack of bones' look because he was always
on the run, never walking anywhere if he could run it instead.
After the cannon balls quit jaring the household, Henry moved
his young family to Indiana (near Fort Wayne) where he remained
until 1880, when they decided to move west. The eldest son,
Theodore, went west first and died of typhoid fever. This
probably convinced the family to move north instead. When they
came north, Ed, then a young man of 16 drove them in a horse
and cart, most likely a Studebaker. Henry, Magdeline and seven
children settled just southwest of Custer on Kintner Road to
homestead the land.
Henry and Magdeline got their family up at 4:00am every
morning, summer and winter. After breakfast, they read the
Bible and then cut wood and did the chores. When the weekly
paper came, no one touched it until the chores were done.
Henry would then sit down and read the paper to his family.
People said he was the best reader around. Son Ed took after
his father in this talent.
Two more children were born to Henry and Magdaline in Mason
County. The whole consisted of: Edward Henry (1864-1927)
married Emma Kriegh (1871-1944); Joseph Emery (1867-1963)
married Sarah Paxton (1897-1920); Catherine Elnora (1869-1940)
married Amos Shue (1855-1920); Daniel Webster (1871-1952)
married Almeda Kriegh (1876-1956); John Wesley (1873-1919)
married Saloma Baylor (1879-1967); Lydia Ann Melinda
(1877-1955) married four times, last Edward Lockard; Mary Alice
(1879-1959) married Edward Deake (1875-1951); Charles Austin
(1881-1963) married Myrthle Vorsee (1895-1971); and Alvin
Arthur (1884-1961 married Jessie Pearl Udey (1883-1962).
Henry and his sons supported the family by working as brick
masons (and any other odd jobs they could find). When it came
to laying bricks, even two of his own sons couldn't keep up
with this wiry man. He would get his half of the wall built
before they could get the other half done.
Henry and/or his sons built Scottville School, Riverside
School, Fern School, Locke School, Bennett School, and the old
Ludington Water Works building. Since the family owned the
molds and made their own blocks, you can tell what the family
built if you can recognize the pattern. It was the only
pattern like it in the county.
Henry was Catholic by birth, but took the religion of his
adopted parents. He and Magdaline were staunch members of the
local Dunkard Chruch and then of the Free Methodist Church,
both located south of Custer. Although they both spoke German
when the children were young, because Magdaline's mother lived
with them and spoke no English, they switched to English when
they realized the children were also speaking it. This did not
change the German attitude of their household. Henry had a hot
temper to match his red hair and his word and the Bible were
law. Henry loved to work and their life was one of hard work
with few frills permitted by their religious beliefs.
Three of Henry's sons took seriously the religious training of
home and went off to make Free Methodist preachers at Spring
Arbor College. Joe and Charlie made it but Ed got kicked out
for attending a political rally. so he came home and worked as
a mason and a blacksmith (a trade he learned working at a
carriage factory in Ft. Wayne). John became a well digger, Dan
was a farmer and a mason and Alvin worked at the Watch Case.
Mary married a preacher, Lydia married often, and Elnora
married a lumberman. Little if known of the half-brother
Theodore. Whatever the relationship, he went out west to
Indian Territory and died at the age of 21 after having
contracted typhoid fever. He is buried at Harper, Kansas and
was a mason by trade.
Henry and Magdaline moved from the farm in Custer to Scottville
when he retired. When Henry became unable to care for himself,
he and Magdaline went to live with his daughter Elnora, in
Ludington. He died there on February 19, 1918. His wife then
returned to south Custer to live her remaining year with her
son Edward. She died February 24, 1919.
Magdeline's mother, Catherine, died in 1879 and is buried at
Locust Grove Cemetery, Henry County, Indiana. Her father was a
school teacher.

and here is another:
GABRIEL AND MARY HUFF (HOFF) OF PA AND LOUDOUN CO, VA
Gabriel HUFF (c 1766 Northumberland Co, PA - 1 Nov 1813
Grenadier
Island,
Saint Lawrence River, Soldier in War of 1812) enlisted as a pvt
on 11
Nov
1812 in Charlestown, now WV, for five years in the Regular
Army, and
was
assigned to Capt Andrew L. Madison's Comp, 12th Infantry, under
Col
Willaby
Morgain. He was a farmer with dark eyes, dark hair, and dark
complexion. It
was a year later that he died on the St Lawrence River, of
sickness.
His
accounts with the Army were settled in Dec, 1818, as #3925,
with the
help of
Stephen LUCAS, who had served with Gabriel HUFF, and had helped
bury
him
after his death.
In 1845 and 1846, the heirs of Gabriel HUFF asked Honorable
Alex HARPER
of
the House of Representatives to pursue their claim for bounty
land. He
asked
for proof of kinship, which was prepared in Muskingum Co, OH.
The
record
made 13 April 1846 showed children and heirs at law: James;
Willis;
Cornelius; Sarah; Catherine; Nancy; Joseph; and Mary. The heirs
were
granted
BLWT 15886-160-12.
On 30 Jan 1910, S. A. COHAGAN, a descendant, asked for
clarification of
service for Gabriel HUFF. He was a schoolteacher at Iowa State
Teacher's
College, Cedar Falls, IA. He thought Gabriel was in service
during the
Rev.
War, and he was trying to join the Sons of the American
Revolution. He
was
sent a copy of the 1846 family listing. At the time of the
letter, S.
A.
COHAGAN had access to the original patent for land issued to
the heirs.
(This letter shows that Gabriel HUFF was father to James Boy
HUFF, who
had
also served in the War of 1812 and had settled in Davis Co, IA,
on his
own
bounty land. S. A. COHAGAN was grandson of James Boy HUFF).
In 1820, James HOOF and Willis HOOF had lived in Faquier Co,
VA. Joshua
HOOF
was nearby as a possible relative. Willis was still there in
1850, but
in
1830, he was listed as HOUGH. James B. had moved to Muskingum
Co, OH,
by
1830 and was still there when the family list was made in 1846.
In
fact, it
seems likely that James B. prepared the list. Cornelius HUFF is
harder
to
trace, but he may have gone to OH as well. O. L. HOUGH was able
to
identify
the last three ch in Loudoun Co, VA, Court records: Mary HOFF,
widow of
Gabriel, had minor ch Nancy (1808); Joseph (1811); and Mary Ann
(1813).
Nathan NICHOLS, Jr, was granted guardianship papers in 1819.
The first
record for Gabriel was the 1787 tax list when he and Leonard
(or
Lawrence)
were listed as HOUGH with James HOUGH. From research by O. L.
HOUGH, we
know
that Gabriel HUFF (HOFF, HOUGH) was identifiable in Loudoun Co,
VA,
court
records in 1791. He was also on 1803 records. When he enlisted
in 1812,
he
had at least eight ch, the oldest known birth year 1790. The ch
later
used
HOOF, HOFF, HUFF, and sometimes were recorded as HOUGH.
Gabriel's enlistment record shows he was born in Northumberland
Co, PA.
Conclusions by O. L. HOUGH that Gabriel was descendant of
Derrick
Pauluszen
HOFF seem justified, though the exact lineage seems difficult
to find.
Several apparent relatives, Gabriel, Lawrence, and James HOFF,
came to
Loudoun Co, VA, from PA or NJ by 1787. There were also HOFF
inviduals
in
Prince William Co named Charles, James, Peter, Moore, Powell,
and
Jonathan.
The birth county tends to suggest that Gabriel was not son of
Charles
HOFF,
Sr. of NJ; however, the Prince William Co group may have been.
Gabriel may have md twice. On 23 Oct 1917, a petition to a
quiet title
was
filed in Davis Co, IA, by James N. HUFF, son of James B., and
C. F.
BROWN,
vs Willis; Cornelius; Catherine; Nancy; Joseph; and Mary HUFF,
and
unknown
heirs of Gabriel and Julia HUFF, both deceased. (It may be that
these
descendants did not know the correct name of Gabriel's wife.
Actually,
all
those on the list would have been dead by that time.) Ch:
1. Willis HOOFF ( - alive 1850, Faquier Co, VA) md and ch incl
George
Washington; David; and Jacob;
2. James Boy HUFF (15 Aug 1790 VA - 17 Dec 1879 Davis Co, IA)
on 19 Sep
1819
at Warrenton, VA, md Mary Thomas BERRY (28 Jul 1803 - 15 Mar
1885 IA)
and
lived in Faquier Co, VA, then Muskingum Co, OH, then after 1847
in
Davis Co,
IA. James B. HOOF also served in the War of 1812, and he was
pensioned
in
1871. After he died, his wife received a pension. Ch were

And another:
FREDERICK AND VIOLET HUFF OF GERMANY AND VA
Frederick HUFF ( ) is said to have migrated from Switzerland or
Germany
to
join a brother Phillip in America. He is said to have come
first to PA,
thence to MD, and possibly to VA. His descendants are not clear
on
either
his moves, wives, children, or relatives. It is clear that
these
descendants
are of German descent, apparently still speaking German and
working in
German church communities. One version is that Frederick in PA
md a
Violet
PUCKETT (or BUCKETT) and had four known ch and possibly others.
It is clear that one Frederick HOOF lived in Augusta Co, VA,
where on 4
Jan
1799 he md Madlena FAWNER ( ) , dau of Christian FAWNER, who
was
surety.
This could have been a second marriage for the original
Frederick, or
it
could be some other relative or unrelated person.
Ch:
1. Ludwig (or Lewis) (b in PA or MD - will of Aug 1823, prob.
23 Jan
1833
Botetourt Co, VA) listed ch as Abraham; Daniel; David; Peter;
Catherine;
John; Mary Ann; Samuel; and possibly another dau.
2. Powell H. (1791 - 17 June 1884 Salem, VA) md (1) Elizabeth
W. KENNER
and
had Alexander and Ursala and Adolphus E. and possibly others.
He md (2)
Mrs.
Eliza Ann (DILLARD) GREEN and had Charles; Henry; Chilion O.;
Masselia;
and
Edward. Powell was a veteran of the War of 1812.
3. James C. (1792 - 7 May 1870 Salem, VA) was also a veteran of
the War
of
1812. He md (1) Jane G. GODWIN and lived in Salem. Ch were John
R.;
Janus
C.; Harriet A.; Albert W.; Sarah J.; and Eliza E. He md (2)
Harriet
NOBLE,
and they had Millard F.
4. Susannah (1789 VA - ) md Jacob SNYDER.
Other ch who have been suggested incl:
? Phillip
? Benjamin
? Nicholas
? Peter
If the person listed below in Augusta Co is not this Frederick,
it is
possible that he was an older son. The tradition among
descendants is
that
Frederick of this lineage still lived in 1810 in MD, but this
may be
wrong.
Huff lineage is Frederick and ? Violet (?Puckett) of Germany
and PA;

ABRAHAM AND ANNA HUFF OF NJ, PA, VA, AND KY
Abraham HUFF (1749 NY/NY - ) by family tradition md Anna POWELL
( )
then
settled in Adams Co, PA, along with other Dutch families. They
then
lived
for some time in the Shenandoah Valley of Va, then by 1793 near
present
Maysville, KY. Their first child was born in Adams Co, PA, and
it may
have
been Cornelius. This family tradition has not been verified,
and the
only
child now identified from this tradition is Cornelius.
a. Cornelius (3 June 1770 PA - before 1830 Sullivan Co, IN) in
1802 in
Washington Co, KY, md Elizabeth BELL ( ). Ch incl John B.;
William;
Edward
G.; David; Catherine; and Elizabeth.
(At the Mud Meeting House Cemetery in Mercer Co, KY, there is a
monument
which states: "Abraham Huff, Soldier of Revolutionary War." Who
this
monument refers to is not known, It does not seem likely it
refers to
this
Abraham HUFF, but it may.)
Lineage for this Abraham HUFF has been worked out by
descendants to be
Abraham and Anna (Powell) of NJ, PA, VA, and KY; Laurenz
Benjamin and
Cornelia (Voorhees) Hoff of NJ; Jacob and ??? Hoff of NJ;
Laurnes and
???
Hoofft of NJ; Barent Willem Hooft (Benjamin William Huff) from
Burgundy
region of France to Munster, Germany, to Holland, then to New
York
settlements. No documention is known to support this lineage.
