Note: Jacob and his wife, Elizabeth, lived what they believed. They
assisted needy families with money and goods. Elizabeth helped
during times of illness with her knowledge of the art of
healing. Using herbs and folk remedies, passed down from her
grandfather Indian Sam, she was always on call to ease pain and
suffering among her neighbors. A story illustrating this
survives:
The farm of Samuel Bachert adjoined that of Jacob Bergey. The
Bacherts were recent arrivals from Hesson, Germany and were in
financial straits, unable to pay their taxes. So that they
would not lose their land, Jacob Bergey paid their bill without
their knowledge. Bachert learned of this later, and to clear
the debt, deeded Bergey a few acres of land. The jog in the
line fence remains to this day, a monument to the friendship
that continues to this day. The Bacherts continue to say "As
long as there are Bacherts and Bergeys they will be friends."
