Lawton, Evelyn Belle {I82} (b. 18 MAY 1912)

Note: My full name is Evelyn Belle (Lawton) Nye and I was named after
my mother's older sister, Cora Belle. My nickname as a young
child was Babe. When I was 14 I told my family to call me by
my real name; however, to my sister Grace's family I will
always be Aunt Babe.

I was born in Section 9 (NW 1/4 of NW 1/4), Caldwell Twp,
Missaukee Co, Michigan on May 18, 1912. I don't really
remember my grandparents very much. I only saw my Grandma
Lawton about twice. My Grandpa Lawton came and stayed for
awhile after my Grandma died and he talked quite a lot about
his trip to Michigan and his early days of cutting down trees
for a home, etc. My Grandpa and Grandma Garn died before I was
born.

The oldest person I can remember is my Grandpa Lyman Pearl
Lawton. He was a very staunch Free Methodist who preached
sometimes. He was always asking me if I was saved. I didn't
know what he meant, but they taught us. I didn't know God as a
loving God at the time.

Probably the worst job I ever had to do was wash Grace & Lois's
diapers. I'm sure you understand; however, I've been in worse
messes since.

My favorite bedtime story that I remember was the prayer we
used to pray: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my
soul to keep. If I should died before I wake I pray the Lord
my soul to take.

I never remember a time when we didn't have enough food. We
were on a farm with cows, chickens and a bountiful garden. We
also picked blueberries and blackberries. Living on the farm I
had all kinds of jobs. I was a good little worker, so I did
lots of things. Looking after baby chicks and their moms,
cleaning, gardening, etc.

I remember my favorite toy was a doll. We didn't have many
toys - we were fortunate just to have food and shelter. My
favorite games were Teeter Totter, Hide & Seek, Antie over the
kitchen roof, and tag. When I was a child, I adored my Aunt
Lula McGhan. I wanted to be a teacher like she was. I didn't
have that opportunity, so I went into nursing instead.

My first 8 years of school was at a country school (one room
schoolhouse). It was heated by a wood stove. I think we
learned from hearing other older kids recite. We all had to be
quiet. I walked 1 mile to and from school every day, over a
non-traveled road and on a big hill. By the winter we
travelled on homemade skiis. Occasionally if the road was too
bad, Dad would hook up the horses and we got a sleigh ride.

Arithmetic was the easiest subject for me. I liked all of
them, though. During school we played baseball at noon hour
during nice weather. We never were able to hang out after
school. We had to hurry home, change our clothes, and work
wherever we were needed.

I wasn't ever given any special awards during school but I was
given verbal compliments. I never had any difficulties in
school. I was happy to go and have friends. I completed 8
years of country school and 4 years of high school. I also had
3 years of nurses training and affiliated for 3 months in
obstetrical nursing, pediatrics, and mental hospital. My
grades during school were B's and C's. I liked school very
much. I find the Bible very interesting. I was always eager
to learn. I still like to read good books and articles that
will add to my understanding. I usually wore black shoes and
long black cotton stockings, bloomers (Mama made full elastic
at waist and knees), a slip and dresses that I wore all week to
school.

I was approximately 19 when I started dating. Papa wouldn't
let go even when I was going with Virgil, who would become my
husband. My first real date was with Virgil. When I was a
senior in high school, my friend and I rented a room from his
mother and he was 4 years older than me. I met him on one of
his visits home. Our first date was dinner at home. Verne
went back with us so that Virgil wouldn't have to come back
alone.

We didn't know each other long enough before we got married.
Virgil was more mature than I was, and it would have been
better had we waited. My wedding proposal wasn't very exotic.
We, like alot of others, thought we couldn't wait. I guess I
knew Dad would never give me away anyway. We eloped. I wasn't
through training yet and I was in Detroit. We were married by
a United Methodist minister at his home. His wife and another
lady were the attendants. Our wedding was a secret because I
wasn't done with my nurses training yet. We didn't have a
honeymoon because I had to be on duty at 7am the next day.

Virgil was a quiet person. He was tender and kind. I was
looking for someone who would be a good father to our children
and he certainly was. We were married 59yrs, 8mos and 5 days.
As we said our final good-byes, he mouthed "good-bye". That's
a moment that is with me frequently.

Being a nurse, I knew the symptoms for being pregnant. We had
four children: Royce Lynn, Oct 24, 1934; Terry Monto, Sept 5,
1942; Ardath Elaine, Oct 14, 1944; and Ronald Gene, Dec 15,
1945. When I was pregnant for Ron, Royce put his arms around
my waist and asked me if I was going to have another baby. I
said yes and he hugged me and said he was happy. They were all
saying cute things and doing cute things. I had some neat
kids.

Once Virgil made Ardath a high chair for her doll. She was
always looking for Christmas stuff, so Virgil called her Snoopy
and it stuck for a long time.

Once Ron was watching the doctor examine Ardath when she was
hurt. The doctor said to her "You have a fat little tummy".
Ron said, "So does my Mommy."

I found out I was going to be a grandparent for the first time
when Royce called me. Joan was in labor in Mount Pleasant,
about 7pm. They were almost 75 miles away, so I went to the
ball field and traded cars with Virgil and was on my way. I
arrived just as they were wheeling Joan to the Delivery room.
Royce and I got to view the baby through the window. I left
about 2am because I had to work the next day.

As a nurse, I did alot of things. I had private duty, which
included working in a hospital and at people's homes, I
assisted during deliveries at hospitals and at homes, and I was
a charge nurse. When I did private duty I sometimes worked 24
hours a day, so I would catch rest when I could. Otherwise I
worked 12 hours shifts. I was 70 years old when I retired.

I consider myself to be open-minded politically. I am more
conservative than liberal, though. I never liked to see things
wasted; however, I liked to see needs taken care of, especially
for people and the environment.

Once upon a time I was 5'4". Now that I'm 88 years old, I'm
only 5'. When I was younger my hair was dark. I wore my hair
in beautiful long braids that had to be combed and ribboned
every morning for school. Now my hair has gradually turned
grey. My eyes are Irish blue.

As an adult I always lived in Manton, Michigan except for two
years in Midland. Now that I'm a widow, I spend my winters in
Tuscon, Arizona to be near my son and daughter. I've never
wanted to live anywhere else. I've been very thankful for
growing up in Michigan and enjoy the four seasons. Tuscon is a
wonderful place to live in the winter. I've never spent a
summer here, but will probably need to soon. One of the joys
of growing old is graying hair and wearing glasses. Soon,
dentures and a walking cane or walker, depending on "Depends",
and having to remember to take all of my pills.

The church that I attended regularly as an adult was the United
Methodist Church of Manton. As a child, I was Free Methodist.
I deeply feel that our spitirual relationships are between
ourselves and God. We need to read the scriptures and follow
the route of being with Godly people, helping people who need
help, and being kind, thoughtful and understanding.

I never learned to play any musical instruments. My hobbies
are reading, crocheting, knitting, sewing, spending time with
friends, helping others when needed, baking, cooking, cakes and
pies, writing letters, etc.

I've belonged to many women's groups, local clubs, school
alumni, PTA, church groups, the Michigan Nurses Association,
and the Red Cross. My favorite season of the year is fall. My
favorite holiday is Easter. My favorite colors are red and
blue.

The longest trip I've ever gone on was when we left Michigan
and drove to Portland, Oregon. My husband and I took his
sister with us. We visited our grandson, his wife, and our
great grand daughter, Sara. Then we went on to Tucson, Arizona
and we also saw the Grand Canyon.

I loved camping, so we did that a few times throughout our busy
lives. I always wanted to travel more; however, with our
children going to other states we've traveled quite a lot.
Virgil loved to drive.

I hope this tells you at least something of what you wanted to
know about my early years on the farm and at school. We just
lived in our own little world, no radio or TV, no electricity,
no indoor plumbing. Fortunately we had parents who loved us,
loved God, and did the best they could to give us a desire to
go out into the world to be good people.

Lawton, Lyman Pearly {I87} (b. 11 APR 1845, d. 21 APR 1925)
Note: Tombstone says he was born in 1846.
Note: Died of chronic myocarditis.
Note: Lyman Pearly Lawton, born April 11, 1845 in St. Lawrence
County, New York, was of pioneer stock that developed the state
of Michigan, pioneering first with his parents with whom he
came to southern Michigan when but 5 years of age.
The Lawtons settled near Coopersville and soon after the
mother, Margaret, died leaving a family of eight young
children. Their struggles can be imagined only by those who
have gone through similar experiences.
When 21 years of age, young Lyman married Miss Margaret Harris
in Big Springs, Ottawa County about 18 miles from Grand Rapids.
A daughter, Addie Lenora, was born July 11, 1868. When Addie
was about three years old, Lyman went to a still more
undeveloped area about 18 miles from Cadillac at Meawautaka to
take up a homestead. He had to stay three months on the
homestead. He built a small log house and a barn before
returning for his wife and daughter. It took many days and
nights to move. When they ran out of bread, wife Margaret
rolled out biscuits on the wagon seat and baked them in hot
coals of the camp fire. They had to keep fires burning to keep
the wolves away.
When the Free Methodist Church was organized, both Lyman and
Margaret became early converts.
A baby son George was born to Lyman and Margaret. He lived
only three years - all that time being helpless and a great
care to his parents. About this time Margaret became ill and
was forced to return to her brother George Harris's home where
she died at age 28 with tuberculosis when Addie was just 7 €
years old.
At this time, Lyman heard they were giving away land to
settlers. He moved to Meauwataka in Colfax Township (near
Cadillac). The land wasn't cleared and when they removed the
trees for homes and lumber they found that the soil was poor.
The storekeeper in the area, Elijah Smith, knew that Lyman
needed a wife. He told Lyman that he had a sister. Sarah Ann
Smith, a young school teacher from New York state had been left
homeless at an early age. She was raised by some people named
Tuttle who were very mean to her. She taught school in New
York state before coming to Michigan upon the request of her
brother Elijah. It has been said that her brother told her he
had a man for her. She was born in Danby, Duncan County, New
York on February 14, 1852 and came to Michigan at age 19 where
she met Lyman. On August 20, 1877, Lyman and Sarah married.
Sarah not only became a good mother to Addie but also had seven
children of her own. Her family is as follows: Stowell Ernest
b. 3-18-1879 d. 4-28-1974 m. Miss Minnie Garn; children:
Floyd, Leah, Evelyn, Verne, Grace, Lois, Earl Chesley b.
7-11-1880 d. 9-11-1881; death caused by whooping cough. Ethel
May b. 10-23-1882 d. 1-11-1963 m. Orin Train Larr; children;
Virtol, Milford, Bernice, Velma, Ernest and Dora. Maud Pearl
b. 7-25-1885 d. 12-23-1958 m. Alfred Thompson; children:
Della, Virl, Clarence, Doris, Laurel, June, Earl. Lula
Elizabeth b. 5-19-1887 d. 6-12-1972 m. Oscar McGhan; children:
Lawrence. Winnifred Emma b. 9-5-1892 d. 7-8-1952 m. William
Standish; children: Iva, Earl, Roy, Marshall. Lloyd Elijah b.
10-7-1895 m. Mrs. Minnie Laird Peters, and Mrs. Sophia Lyon
Salisbury; stepchildren: Myrtle and Earl Peters; Verda,
Melbourne, Darwin, Velma, and Vonda Salisbury.
In the spring of 1900 the Lawton family moved to Mason County.
They started to drive through with the team and wagon. One of
the horses balked and laid down. Since they didn't want to
drive a balky horse they went back, disposed of things, and
took the 'stage' from Uncle Elijah Smith's store to Cadillac.
They took the Grand Rapids and Indiana train to Reed City, and
the Pere Marquette train to Custer where they were met by
relatives. The Lawtons lived in a house owned by R. S. McClain
just south of Reseguie School. Later they lived on the Barrett
place (now owned by James Allison), then they lived on South
Tuttle Road just north of the Martin farm. Then they bought
the farm now owned by Joe Giammalva. The first house they
lived in was moved to the farm.
The younger children received all or most of their education at
Resseguie School except Lula who went on to be a teacher.
The family raised apples and peaches besides other crops. It
was necessary to carry all water from a spring at the foot of
the hill near the creek. During this time much of the
responsibility of the farm gradually fell upon the shoulders of
Lloyd. Also it was during this time that Lula's husband died
with tuberculosis. She brought her young son to his
grandparents where Grandma Lawton and Aunt Winnie helped to
care for him while his mother continued her education.
By 1917 Lloyd was old enough to register for the draft of WWI.
The farm and everything was sold except the household
furnishings. Lyman and Sarah moved to Scottville on North
Thomas Street. Lloyd was called to military service in 1918.
Sarah died on Mother's Day on May 11, 1924 with diabetes.
After that Lyman lived with daughter Addie at 421 North Robert
Street, Ludington. He passed away on April 21, 1925. Both are
buried in Brookside Cemetery, Scottville, Michigan.
Daughter, Addie's family included Eva, Grace, Hazel, Violet,
Floyd, Ford. She married Andrew McClain in Wexford County.
Daughter Hazel was a miniature sized person.
Both Sarah and Lyman Lawton were long time faithful members of
the Free Methodist Church, with Lyman being a minister for his
church.

Smith, Sarah Ann {I88} (b. 14 FEB 1852, d. 11 MAY 1924)
Note: Died of Diabetes (gangrene of the feet and legs). Since
November of 1923 she had been bedfast and such was the nature
of her disease, her pain was at times almost beyond human
nature to endure. But with patience and Christian fortitude
she bore it all never complaining, always appreciative of the
kindness of her family and friends.
Note: Sarah Smith's mother died when Sarah was just a small child.
Sarah had a hard life and was put in a family where she worked
hard and was cruelly treated. Her brother, Elijah Smith, it
seems, helped her to get away from this place. Sarah was also
a teacher in New York State.

Note: Sunday afternoon Mrs. Lyman P. Lawton answered the summons of
the Grim REaper and was released from her terrible suffering.
Since last November she had been bedfast and such was the
nature of her disease, her pain was at times almost beyond
human nature to endure. But with patience and Christian
fortitude she bore it all never complaining, always
appreciative of the kindness of her family and her friends.

Sarah A. Smith was born in Danby, N.Y. Feb 14, 1852 and died
May 11th, 1924. In October 1876 she came to Cadillac to keep

Ludington, to whom she was as a mother.

Twenty-three years ago they came to Custer township to farm
where they remained until six years ago last fall when they
moved to Scottville to reside. Mrs. Lawton led a beautiful
Christian life, was loving and devoted to her family, very
patient and so thoughtful of others, even in her sickness
planning and thinking of the family welfare only.

About 12 years ago she became ill of sugar diabetes terminating
into gangrene. Left to mourn the passing of this devoted wife
and mother is the aged husband, four daughters, Mrs. Ethel
Larr, Mrs. Maud Thompson of So. Custer; Mrs. Lulu McGhan and
Mrs. Winnie Standish of Scottville. The oldest son Stowell
Lawton of Manton, Mich., and son Lloyd at home. One sister

Laude, Francis Earl {I101} (b. 13 AUG 1917, d. 12 JAN 1995)
Note: Died of cerebral thrombosis (3 day duration). Other
contributing factors were hypertension. Cerebral thrombosis =
massive stroke.
Note: Trapper, logger, lumberman, farmer, real estate salesman,
overseer of Packing Material Co. Property in Mason's Lake
County. After graduating from high school, Earl worked on the
car ferry. He used to hitch rides on the car ferry and on
boxcars. After that, he worked in a Civilian Conservation Corp
camp in the Porcupine Mountains doing forestry, planting trees,
etc.

I remember alot of stories like the time Grandpa and a friend
were stuck in a big swamp rabbit hunting and a big snow storm
rolled in. They wandered around till it got almost
dark..lost...they had no food no matches no nothing...so what
did grandpa do? He broke off a branch and grabbed his favorite
dog and started to whoop the tar out of it..he beat that dog
till his arm went numb and then let it go...what do you think
that dog did? That's right it tore off in a beeline to the car
and saved Grandpa and his friend!!!!!! Grandpa said that dog
shied away from him for the longest time but he eventually
spoiled him rotten!!!!
And I have many more stories that grandpa made up to entertain
us from the elephant at amber to the baby beaver sitting on his
mothers back..oh and so many more......
