Marriage of Caskey, William S. {I1259} (b. 11 FEB 1811, d. 21 AUG 1873) and Wasson, Clarissa {I1260} (b. ABT 1818, d. BEF 1890)
Note: William S. Caskey was born in Roxbury, New Jersey on Feb 11,
1811. He lived with his father, Robert Caskey, who was a
farmer, until he was twenty-one years of age. William came to
Michigan in 1833 and took up a tract of eighty acres of land in
section 28 in Washtenaw County on June 28, 1836. He worked by
the month for others until May 11, 1843, when he was married to
Clarissa Wasson, who came with her father from Genesee County,
New York, in 1836 and settled in Unadilla.
Mr. Caskey and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church
at Plainfield; he assisted in its organization June 1, 1838, at
the house of Levi Clawson, and was for many years one of its
deacons. He was charitable and kind hearted. William also
became an assessor in 1840.
In 1844, Mr. Caskey commenced improving his land. He and his
young wife moved into a log house on adjoining land in section
33 and occupied it the first year, during which time a few
acres of land had been cleared, and a log house of the rudest
sort had been erected on his own land. From this small
beginning, by the strictest economy and industry, a fine farm
had been developed from the wilderness. In May of 1838, his
real estate and personal estate were worth $560 and he paid
taxes of $3.20.
William became a leading citizen in Livingston County. He was
a highway commissioner in 1852, director of the poor in 1853,
and a school inspector in 1879.
William died August 21, 1873, leaving four children - three
sons and one daughter. The oldest, Robert W., is a farmer in
Iosco. He enlisted in Company L., Third Michigan Cavalry, and
served until February, 1866. Jonathan B. was a farmer in Iosco.
William S. Jr. and Sarah B. lived at the old home with their
mother, who shared with them the cares and responsibilities of
the farm. William S. Caskey was a just man and much respected.
