Note: Charles A. Lemon was the Minister.
Note: Orton and Teckla met when Orton's mom became ill with breast
cancer and Teckla Larson, as a teenager, went to take care of
her. Orton and Teckla were married on October 16, 1912 by a
Justice of the Peace in Ludington. They went by horse and wagon
and passed some men who were working on the road. The workmen
tied tin cans on the back of the wagon. Later, Orton
discovered that he'd forgotten the marriage license and had to
go back. He didn't want to pass the workmen again, so Orton
hiked across a field to get the license.
Orton and Teckla began married life in the Victory homestead
that we remember, but lived there for only a few months before
they moved to Bordulac, North Dakota to work on a farm with
Grandpa's sister, Aunt Minnie and Uncle George. While there,
their first child, Otis, was born. They only lived in North
Dakota for two years when they received word that Teckla's
father was sick and came back to live on the Victory homestead.
The thing that we all remember best about Grandma and Grandpa
was their deep religious conviction and love of God. They
started to go to church when, what is now Washington Avenue
Baptist Church in Ludington, started as a mission church in
Victory. It met first in an empty Lutheran Church across from
Diamond School (the country school that all eight children
attended). This property was sold and the church moved to the
Diamond School for several years, until it burned. During this
time, Orton and Teckla became Christians. They were baptized
in the Washington Avenue Church in Ludington.
The many descendants of Orton and Teckla Smith are grateful for
the heritage, moral character, leadership and religious
background which has remained, and which we have followed.

Note: After Otis (called Neil) graduated from the eighth grade at
Diamond School, he worked for different farmers, Thurman Fisher
being one of them. He also worked for Louie Olson in the
gravel pit. When he was twenty years old he spent a year in
the Civil Conservation Corp in the upper penninsula near
Newberry. When his year was finished he worked at various jobs
until he went to work at Cambell, Wayne and Cannon Foundry in
Muskegon. When we were married in 1938 he was working for
Quinn's on a farm south of Scottville. After that we moved to
Victory Township and worked on Ervin McVicker's farm where we
farmed for a year. We then moved to Custer on Howard Gregory's
farm where we farmed for two years. We then moved to Aunt
Ester's place in Victory Township, but because of gas shortage
we had moved to Ludington for the winter. In the spring we
moved back to Victory Township to the Beal's place for two
years. During this time Otis worked in Ludington for the
Austin Construction Company, building the Dow Chemical Plant.
In 1944 during World War II Otis was drafted to the service so
he went to Detroit, passed the physical, completed the papers
for induction into the army, came home, and waited to be
called. Otis received his call to report in one week so he
told his employer. During that week he was called into the
office and told that the law had just been changed and he was
deferred because they were no longer taking anyone over
twenty-six with a family as long as there were available men
under twenty six. At the end of this deferment he was given
another, and then another so he never had to go.
We then moved to Ludington where we lived for ten years.
During this time Otis worked at the Handy Things and Carrom
factories eventually getting a job at the Dow Chemical Company
as a truck driver where he worked for several years. Otis was
working at the Dow Chemical Company when the Korean War ended,
they lost alot of orders and he got laid off. Otis then went
back to the Carrom Company where he was only working three days
a week. To augment his income Otis drove truck for George
Towns.
It was during this time that Iva and Eugene told us that
General Motors was hiring at the Ternstedt Division so Otis
went back with them to Mt. Morris and got a job at Ternstedt.
Otis had only worked for three days when he was called home
because his daughter Ruthie had drowned. In October 1954 we
sold our home in Ludington and moved to Clio where we have
lived for the last forty-three years.
Otis worked for General Motors for twenty-five years and
retired October 1st 1978.

Note: The things I remember about Marie. She was a loving, wonderful
sister. While still at home she used to comb my hair and I used
to run and hide because my hair was curly and it pulled when
she combed it.
After she married Jack, they moved to Freesoil and lived in an
upstairs apartment. I used to stay with them sometimes. I
remember they had one room for storage and she made me a
playhouse in it. I just loved it.
Later on they moved to Grand Rapids. I remember taking a trip
down there one time, I thought it took forever to arrive there.
We had such a good time with her and Jack.
Marie attended Ludington High School and roomed there. I
remember she had alot of boyfriends and everybody loved her.
- Iva Smith Figgins
I first met Marie on October 8, 1936 when she and Jack brought
Neil over to meet me. We stood up for their wedding which was
the next day at her folks, Orton and Teckla's home in Victory
township.
After their marriage they lived upstairs at Randolph & Sarah
Mendenhall's home in Freesoil for a year (they were Jack & my
grandparents) and Jack worked for my father, Carl Lucker, on
his farm.
They then moved to Grand Rapids where John was born on April
21st, 1938. Marie died a year later on March 4th, 1939.
