Sanders, Orval Edward {I474} (b. 02 JUL 1895, d. APR 1983)
Note: Orval was born in Walkerville, Oceana County, on July 2, 1895.
His parents, Edward and Emma (Kreigh) Sanders were pioneers of
Mason County, living in Walkerville about ten years where he
owned a blacksmith shop. The family moved to Custer in 1903.
Orval helped his father in the Custer blacksmith shop and
attended rural schools. At the age of 16 he went to Canada to
homestead, but then returned home to prevent being drafted into
the Canadian Army. He worked on the building of Wellston Dam
until he was inducted into the United States Army on September
18, 1917. Then he was sent to France on December 26, 1917
where he served with Company B, 21st Engineers. He came back
September 16, 1918 as a patient and entered the US General
Hospital at Fort Des Moines, Iowa and was discharged on January
14, 1919.
Orval spent several seasons working on the grain fields of the
Dakotas, plowing prarie with both eight horse teams and teams
of oxen. He also threshed and sheared sheep. At one time he
operated a grocery and meat market in Custer. However most of
his life was spent working as a carpenter and mason.
He married Marguerite Smith, the daughter of Waldo M. and
Martha E. (Sensenbaugh) Smith on September 9, 1929. She was a
graduate of Mason County Normal. She began her career as an
elementary teacher in a Sweetwater Township school in Lake
County. She also taught at Riverside, East Riverton, Custer,
wilson, Victory and Mason County Central schools, retiring in
1972.
Their family home was bought during the depression in 1932.
Much remodeling was done to the old house at 427 Maple in
Custer where they still reside. The cement blocks were made by
hand from forms that had been in the Sanders family. Many
other homes in the area have been made from these unique forms.
A daughter, Martha Louise, was born on October 28, 1931 and a
son, Ronald Edward, on January 25, 1943.
Orval and Marguerite are charter members of both Leveaux Post
#2409 of Ludington and Gold Bar Post #5096 of Custer, Veterans
of Foreigh Wars. She is a past president of both auxillaries
and a past district president. Both are life members of Harold
SNyder Post #30 of the Disabled American Veterans as well as
past commanders. Orval has the longest continual membership in
D.A.V. in Mason County. Since their retirement they enjoy
gardening, hunting, snowmobiling, working in various
organizations and traveling.

Sanders, Robert Lee {I477} (b. 30 NOV 1902, d. 23 DEC 1954)
Note: Robert L. Sanders (1902 - 1954), son of Edward and Emma
(Kreigh) Sanders was born in Walkerville but moved to south
Custer with his family in about 1904. He attended Jenks,
Riverside, and Custer schools. Since his older brothers had
gone west to work, he was needed to help on the family farm so
he left school at an early age.
Robert's approach to work was that of an entrepreneur. He
developed many skills of country living such as raising goats
and sheep, shoeing and riding horses, trapping muskrat and
mink, hunting deer and bear, logging, and selling oil leases.
In the early 1930's, he ranged 150 head of cattle. This
allowed him to be a cowboy without leaving home - which he
vowed when his first job away from home left him so ill he had
to return home to recover. His horse, 'Spot' was one he
actually spotted. As a boy, watching a train load of western
ponies arrive in Custer, he decided 'Spot' was the best one and
would be his someday.
After work, Robert was a welcome guest at local house parties
because he played the fiddle and guitar and loved to square and
round dance. He was everyone's friend and he never saw a
dishonest person.
In the early 1940's, he did leave home and bought a farm near
Grand Haven, Michigan. He used his skills with horses and soon
opened the 'Silver Star Riding Stable' - a popular place when
gas was rationed!
On January 22, 1946, Robert and Mildred Smith (1911-1974) drove
to Hershey, Michigan where a courtship spanning several years
ending in marriage by Uncle (Rev.) Charles Sanders. They
returned home to the 'Silver Star'.
Mildred was the daughter of Waldo M. and Martha E.
(Sensenbaugh) Smith. Born and raised in the Custer area, she
attended Resseguie and Custer schools, graduating in 1929. She
was employed as a postal clerk at the Custer post office until
her marriage. Her spare time was spent hunting, fishing,
entertaining nieces and nephews, and working crossword puzzles.
In 1947, their only child, Sue Ellen, was born. The farm was
always busy with customers, neighbors and relatives enjoying
the Sanders' hospitality and the never-ending supply of work to
be done. After Robert's death in 1954, Mildred sold the farm,
and she and Sue returned to Custer. Mildred secured
employement as a bookkeeper at H. Smedberg and Sons Hardware,
working 17 years until her death in 1974.
Mildred, assisted by her family, began building a home on South
Madison Street. They moved in in 1957 but since Mildred did
not believe in credit, the house was not completed until 1962,
when she could pay for it. The house, yard and garden
reflected her pride and impeccable standard of cleanliness.
she is well known for her sense of independence, honesty,
industry, thrift, and her more than 30 years of public service
in Custer. Mildred and Robert are interred at the Custer
Riverside Cemetery.
