Note: Wounded at Okinawa on May 29, 1945. Received the purple heart
award. The story of how Stanley was wounded at Okinawa as told
to Rachel:

Stan had to jump off a boat and run up on the beach with the
other soldiers to attack the Japanese. He was wounded in the
back of the leg with shrapnel. There were others worse off so
the medic told him he had to get up and run. The Japs were
coming so he got up and ran for his life. He made it! Later,
when he was waiting in line for surgery, he was sure he would
lose his leg. The doctor came and saw him. He learned that
they were both from Kalamazoo! He let Stan be last in line for
surgery so he would have the time to save his leg. He did. He
was in a body cast for a long time in a hospital in Louisiana.
He survived with a slight limp. In his early 50's he did
develop blood clots but otherwise was healthy. He was only 18
when all this happened during World War II. He did not talk
about his experience much but this story he did tell.

Note: Died from a heart attack. Cliff died very suddenly but was
found to have several major arteries blocked. He was a heavy
smoker and coffee drinker as well as having a genetic risk of
heart disease.
